Abu Dhabi Golf Championship Preview

It's probably fair to say that class rises to the top in this event. In it's 5 stagings it has been won twice by Martin Kaymer and Paul Casey and Chris di Marco won the first staging when at the top of his game. With this in mind, my first two picks are at the top end of the market.

The biggest critiscm levelled at Ian Poulter was that he hadn't taken his Match Play form into Stroke Play events. That was put to bed with a strong end to the season which saw him win in Hong Kong and finish 2nd in Dubai. He has started the season in decent nick with a solid 6th in the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. he has yet to be out of the Top 10 here and finished 2nd here last year. I see no reason why he can't find the frame again and hopefully get over the finishing line 1st. 16/1 is just enough to play (was hoping for 20s!).

Next up, Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen. He comes into this off the back of a win in South Africa and his game looks in really good shape at present after his injury problems. Factor in a 5th and a 2nd place finish here in the last 2 season and 20/1 looks a decent bet.

A bit further down the market is Alvaro Quiros. It is somethimes of feast or famine with Quiros but the one thing you do know is when in contention he can get the job done. He finished last year with a 3rd in Dubai and can hopefully bring that game to Abu Dhabi this week. He does have a good record in the Middle East generally and he did finish 11th here last year. At 40/1 it's worth a gamble he brings his A game this week.

Finally, a couple of speculative outsiders in Anders Hansen and Thomas Aiken. Hansen finished last year in good form after an up and down season. He has a decent record here as well and 80/1 looks a bit big. Aiken, for my money, didn't do an awful lot wrong last week he just bumped into Schwartzel holing from bunkers etc. His form is good and although he doesn't have a brilliant record here he did manage 21st last year and is in much consistent form this time around. 100/1 looks big to me.

Bob Hope Classic Preview

I had an initial look at this last night and unfortunately paid the penalty of waiting for all the books to price it up. I say unfortunately as Dave Tindall has picked my two selections and the prices have dropped markedly. But never mind.

Basically, I'm opting for Alex Prugh and DJ Trahan. Reasons are pretty well covered on bettingzone.co.uk for the selections so I'll not waste time here. I'm also largely in agreement with him on Kevin Streelman as well. The only thing that tempers my enthusiasm is that 4 of the last 5 winners had played in Hawaii before coming here. Factor in that Streelman has swapped clubs as well this year and there is just that element of doubt there. May have a small saver on him.

So what of the others, Haas should put together a strong defence but can't get on board at 22/1. Marino finished 2nd for me last week at 60/1 so really can't play him at 33/1 this week. The Hoff makes some appeal at 40s. Again, may be a small saver.

Sony Open Preview

This time of year has a distinct 'start of football season' feel to it and so, like on the European Tour, small stakes for a bit of watching interest.

One player who I do like is Justin Rose at 33/1. He came back well after a poor 1st round last week and finished 12th here last year including rounds of 64 and 65. Hopefully, his run out last week will see him more consistent over the 4 rounds and challenge.

Of the others, Petterson appeals but with stakes split over 1st rnd leader and outright and Tim Clark is also worth a punt. Also had a play on Steve Marino in the Place only market at 11/1 with SkyBet on a course where he has finished 7th and 4th on his last 2 starts here.

Joburg Open Preview

Got to take a similar stance on this as last week with a couple of interest bets at small stakes but nothing too big. Especially given that Grace and Kruger were in great positions to deliver at least a place payout but both finished just outside the Top 5. It maybe says all we need to know that Grace was out celebrating another Top 10 on the Euro Tour on Sunday instead of quiet reflection a great opportunity blown.

Anyway on to this week, I like Ross McGowan here. He finally looks to have dogged the injury problems which prevented his charge at a Ryder Cup slot and is as good as anyone in this field when fit. There were bigger prices available but 30/1 is still value.

I'm also going to take small gambles on Richard Sterne being back to full fitness (there were definate signs last time out) on a course on which he has won previous and on Darren Clarke recaptuirng form on a course where he has not finished out of the Top 5 - he doesn't look a million miles away.

Africa Open Preview

Happy New Year one and all. Back to the Golf then! The US tournament holds little interest to be honest so what of the Africa Open. I've tried hard to look past the market leaders but it is a real struggle. Both Schwartzel and Goosen are in form and go really well on the course, both being previous winners. As such, I'm not going to actually recommend any bets this week as I can't back either at 6/1 and 11/2 respectively.

However, I've had a couple of small bets myself on James Kingston, JBE Kruger and Branden Grace, just to add a bit of interest, at 25/1 (Stan James), 35/1 (Stan James) and 40/1 (Bet365) respectively. Am quite intruiged by Victor Riu as well. Finished the Challenge Tour in decent form and carried that through to the South Africa Open where he finished 7th. BetFreds 200/1 looks big.

Should stress again though, for me not a serious betting event and this is just to make watching the coverage a little more interesting hopefully.

Alfred Dunhill Championship Betting Preview

The 2011 European Tour starts this week in South Africa with the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopards Creek. The head of the market is dominated by home players in Schwartzel, Oosthuizen and Aiken with Sterne not too far behind. I do think Schwartzel and Aiken will go well but can't get too excited at the prices. The concern with the other two revolve around their fitness problems and how sharp their games are.

So, we'll a bit further down the betting and we find the first of the home contingent that we are going to back in Darren Fichardt. He has been in good form on the SA Tour this year including a 4th last time out. He is a former winner at Leopard Creek and has a good record generally here, only missing one cut in 9 starts. Take the 50/1 with William Hill.

The Spanish have a great record here and Rafael Cabrera-Bello could well continue that this week. His game looks in decent shape with 2*Top 16 finishes in his last 3 starts in stronger fields than this. He also has a decent course record not missing the cut in 4 starts and a 4th place finish 2 years ago. 50/1 at Bet365 is a decent price on a very good player.

Another of the home contingent next in Keith Horne at 66/1 with Coral. Horne seems to have run into form of late with finishes of 8-11-4 in 3 of hast 4 starts although he did MC last time out in Hong Kong. Again, he has a good course record including a 6th in 2008 and a 3rd in 2004 and hopefully can go well again this week.

Finally for us this week is one of the Challenge Tour graduates in Lee Slattery. Slattery had a really good season last year on the Challenge Tour, winning the Telnet Trophy and closing the season with finishes of 3-4-8. He has MC last 2 starts and Leopard Creek but he does have a 2nd place finish here in 2007 and a 10th in 2002. He just shaded Matt Haines as a selection on account of his course experience although Coral's 100/1 on a man who finished the season in such fine form is tempting!

Think we're back.

We're back and will have some plays on line Tuesday for the Alfred Dunhill Chamionship. The site will be a 'bit broke' for next week or so as I have to balance doing this with real job to make money to buy people Xmas presents/me beer etc. I'll do my best to make sure plays are on here though.

Dunhill Links Championship

Really, cant make my mind up on what to expect from the Ryder Cup contingent this week. You can make very good arguements for a lot of the team but I can't help but think that the drama, monday finish and subsequent celebrations will have taken their toll. I also like Goosen's chances this week but can't play at a best priced 18/1. So the team for the week for me is:

Oliver Wilson @ 50/1 with William Hill
Simon Dyson @ 55/1 with Stan James
Gregory Bourdy @ 66/1 with Paddy Power
Anthony Wall @ 100/1 with Paddy Power

No Bets!

I said last week on the Twitter account that I give up on the European Tour and given we have a brand new course, I'm going to stick to my guns! So no bets from us this week given the off week on the PGA Tour.
