outright betting
The majority of the bets we post on here will be 'Outright' bets. Here you are betting on the winner of the tournament (or Tiger as he is often known!). Most of the bookmakers will generally pay 1/4 odds for the first 5 places, although some do extend this to 6 for the bigger tournaments. We generally recommend betting each-way which means you are betting to win and place in equal stakes. Some people prefer to bet place only where you are just betting on the golfer finishing in the Top 5 and a few bookmakers now also have Top 10 place markets.
staking
The most important thing about staking, and gambling in general, is only bet what you can afford to lose. We bet to provide a bit of extra interest and fun while watching the golf at a weekend. Our record is posted to a nominal 1pt=£10p stake, so 1pt ew would be £10ew, 0.5ptew would be £5ew etc. This isn't a recommendation and, as we say, please only play with what you can afford to lose.
laying
Laying is the process of betting against a golfer. We wouldn't advocate laying golfers generally as there is a big liability to laying a golfer at big odds. However, it is worthwhile if we have a golfer in contention who has shortened in the betting. We cover it here.
